A good sauna bench needs to be solid, comfortable, cleanable, and built to survive repeated heat and moisture cycles. This free sauna bench detail shows a practical approach to framed sauna bench construction using concealed fastening, proper wall blocking, open decking gaps, and removable bench boards.
The bench assembly uses 1x4 decking with approximately 1/2-inch gaps, with 3/8 inch as a minimum. These gaps support drainage, drying, and air movement between boards. Bench boards are fastened from below to 1x cross members so the finished sitting surface remains free of exposed screw heads. The detail also shows a removable bench-board approach, where the 1x cross members can be screwed down through the gaps between boards, allowing the assembly to be removed for cleaning.
The bench framing is supported by 2x4 or 2x6 members at approximately 16 inches on center, with solid 2x blocking required between wall studs at all bench connection points. Bench supports are attached through furring strips or directly into blocking, and pilot holes are recommended for secure fastening. The detail also includes a 1x6 fascia, or double 1x4 fascia, to finish the bench edge.
The surrounding sauna wall assembly is part of the bench design. The drawing calls for full-depth batt insulation in 2x framing, a foil vapor barrier, 3/4-inch furring strips at studs, and tongue-and-groove paneling. The general notes include installing paper-backed foil from bottom to top with 8-inch overlapped seams, taping all seams and penetrations with high-temperature foil tape rated to at least 350 degrees, and maintaining a continuous vertical air space behind the paneling.
Fastener selection matters in a sauna. This detail calls for no exposed fasteners in wall or bench surfaces that will contact the body, and stainless steel fasteners in thermally modified wood. It also notes that all glass should be tempered.
This drawing is intended as a general sauna design resource, not a project-specific construction document. Bench framing, blocking, fasteners, clearances, heater location, ventilation, lighting, materials, and code requirements should be confirmed for each project.
