A well-built sauna bench should feel solid, dry quickly, allow air to move through the assembly, and keep visible fasteners to a minimum. This free sauna bench detail shows one practical approach to constructing a framed bench with a finished skirt while maintaining ventilation behind the woodwork.
The assembly uses concealed fastening wherever possible. Bench decking is installed with approximately ½-inch gaps to support drainage, drying, and air circulation. Cross members are fastened from below so screw heads remain hidden from the finished seating surface.
The skirt is supported by concealed nailers and framing rather than being attached only at its face. At the wall, blocking is coordinated with the sauna’s furring strips, foil vapor barrier, insulation, and tongue-and-groove paneling. A ventilation space is maintained behind the skirt and adjacent wall paneling to reduce trapped moisture and support drying after use.
The detail also shows common residential sauna bench proportions, including a bench depth of approximately 24 to 26 inches and a seat height of approximately 16 to 18 inches. These dimensions should always be coordinated with the room height, upper bench layout, heater clearances, users, and local project requirements.
This drawing is intended as a general sauna design resource, not a project-specific construction document. Framing, blocking, fasteners, clearances, structural support, and code requirements should be confirmed for each project.
